Description
Description
Grain milling in dairy cow nutrition can have several positive effects:
Increased Digestibility:
Increased Surface Area: Milling breaks down the grain, significantly increasing the surface area exposed to rumen microbes. This allows for more efficient microbial colonization and breakdown of starches.
Reduced Particle Size: Smaller particles are more readily fermented in the rumen, leading to quicker and more complete digestion.
Improved Feed Efficiency:
Faster Nutrient Absorption: Increased digestibility translates to faster nutrient absorption, allowing cows to utilize feed more efficiently.
Reduced Feed Waste: Less undigested material passes through the digestive tract, minimizing feed waste.
Enhanced Milk Production:
Increased Energy Availability: More efficiently digested grains provide a readily available energy source for milk production.
Improved Feed Intake: Increased palatability due to milling can encourage higher feed intake, leading to greater milk yield.
Reduced Risk of Acidosis:
Controlled Starch Release: Proper milling techniques can help control the rate at which starch is released in the rumen, reducing the risk of acidosis (a metabolic disorder caused by excessive acid production).
Orin Makhzan’s Hammer mills are pretty simple to operate and maintain. To get a different-sized product, you just have to swap out the screen to one with larger or smaller holes. If you need to work on the hammers, you can open the housing and replace a hammer or two.
